Is the maintenance of natural stone tiles difficult?
1. Choose the right floor
Natural stone is a natural product. It is formed by nature over millions of years. It is a collective name for various types of natural grey stone, each with its own characteristics. There are natural stone types that are better suited than others for every room or application. It is therefore important to choose the right floor in relation to the space and its use.
2. Be careful with water
Once the natural stone floor has been laid, it is important that the water used for the mortar and grouting material can drain out of the floor. If there is still construction work in your house, make sure you cover the floor with a breathable covering fleece . In this way the moisture from the floor can evaporate, while dirt and liquids from above do not have a chance to penetrate into the natural stone tiles.
When cleaning the natural stone floor, do not use too much water. Water damages the floor as it can penetrate through joints, skirting boards and walls. A slightly damp mop is sufficient for a good cleaning.
3. In addition to cleaning, natural stone also needs nutrition
Immediately after installing the natural stone floor, it is important that you immediately remove the cement veil that was created by grouting the floor. This is best done with an acid-free cement film remover mixed with water. With a scrubbing machine and a hydrogen vacuum, this job is quickly done.
After this one-off cleaning on delivery, weekly vacuuming and mopping with a suitable agent is sufficient to ensure that your natural stone floor retains its optimal appearance.
Make sure you use cleaning products specifically for natural stone, such as Natural Stone Mopping Wax. The wax in this product makes your natural stone floor dirt-repellent, anti-static and non-slip. In addition, this product facilitates the next cleaning.
Do you have a matte natural stone floor and would you rather keep it that way? Then do not choose a product based on soap, (linseed) oil or wax. These products make your floor shine. It is better to mop your natural stone floor weekly with a product such as Nibo Stone Natural Stone Cleaner Universal . This cleaner leaves no residue and is suitable for all natural stone floors.
4. Do not use green soap or natural beeswax
Cleaning with green soap leaves a greasy film on your floor and in the long run this gives a streaky and blotchy appearance. Scrubbing with a natural beeswax is also not such a good idea. The natural stone floor can become dangerously slippery and often all footprints are visible. You can better protect the floor with a synthetic wax.
5. Do not use acidic cleaners
Some types of natural stone, such as marble and bluestone, consist (partially) of lime. Corrosive cleaning products such as chlorine and anti-limescale agents attack the lime and etch into the top layer of the natural stone. This gives lighter or whiter dull spots on the natural stone floor tiles.
6. Protect your floor with a synthetic wax
You can protect your floor against the ingress of dirt or stains, although this is not always necessary. This strongly depends on the chosen natural stone type. More porous natural stone types can be impregnated. This can be done, for example, by treating it annually with a synthetic wax . This wax lays a protective acrylic layer on the natural stone floor tiles. Don't be too hasty with this product, but make sure you always apply a thin layer. A thick layer can cause stains that are difficult to remove afterwards. If you have treated the floor with wax a number of times, it is possible that the floor will look dull. This is because dirt settles into the wax layer. You can remove all previous layers quite easily with a remover.
